I’m not talking about plus size advertising campaigns featuring size ten girls wearing butt pads. I expect that bullshit out of advertisers. I know they are evil.
I’m talking about you guys, social media. You with your hash tags and your “celebrate every body” social media bullshit rhetoric. You’ve just created another fucking standard that 3% of people fit. Where you claim to celebrate all types of plus size women, you really only fawn over and celebrate one. Just the one. And you think you’re so body positive for that.
You post what I call “cupcake girls”, over and over.
Cupcake girls are never taller than 5'7". Cupcake girls are always super duper soft and round all over.
Cupcake girls have apple bodies, and reasonably sized busts and hips.
Cupcake girls can wear anything. Vintage. Bodycon. Pastels. Whatevs. Y'all still look the god damn same, you adorable round soft little things.
Cupcake girls DOMINATE the shit out of our tags.
And I mean, y'all are cute. But you are far from the be all and end all.
But for some reason, people find your images “safe”. So you and yours gets glorified. Good for y'all. Seriously. I’m glad someone here gets to be happy.
But the reality is, most of us aren’t cute little cupcake girls.
Mostly I’m on about tall plus size girls.
Tall.
5’ 10" and up.
Girls built like Valkaries. With swimmers shoulders and skiers calves. Girls who are bust-heavy instead of tummy/butt heavy.
Why does your inspirational bullshitting not apply to us?
Furthermore, you’re actually causing us some major problems by overglorifying the cupcake girl figure on social media.
I work in the plus size fashion industry with a wide range of garments from a wide range of providers. Our industry’s marketing is VERY dependant on social media. Like VERY. VERY. V.E.R.Y. dependant.
And I’m at work every day, watching winter collections go past my desk and 70% are tailored for that cupcake girl shape.
The people who make these clothes look at what we do on social media to help dictate what they produce.
So next time you post “body positivity” or “plus size fashion goals” look twice to see if there isn’t someone a little more differently shaped who deserves your love as well and maybe those up the line will start making clothes for people outside the box.
That, or I’m moving to fucking Asgard, cause it looks like it’s the only place plus size girls over 5'10" are gonna be able to find a Christmas dress this year.

Can we maybe protect the tall girls, the ones who feel like they’re not feminine enough because of their height?

The ones who are painfully aware that they can change their weight, their face, their clothes, but can never change their height.

The ones who are represented in the media as either models or jokes, never just people with feelings.

The ones who get two different types of messages on dating sites, “were you born female?” and “I want you to crush me”, rarely just a simple “hello”.

The ones who feel like everyone else gets represented in ‘different types of women’ posts, but they’re always left out.

We might look imposing and like we can handle ourselves, but some of us just feel like lost kittens who need a little back up sometimes. Because like I said, we’re people too, with and sometimes we feel like people forget that.

Legit though! I’m a hobbyist seamstress and these are my experiences when shopping mainstream:

For example, most H&M blouses these days don’t even have boobdarts. Which means they will sit awkwardly on literally anyone with boobs, no matter the size. But on hangers or when folded on display? They look fab as fuck. Because hangers don’t have boobs. And the models chosen to show them on the catwalk are usually chosen for their lack of boobage too (unless it’s for lingerie), other requirements including ridiculous size and weight requirements. As for the average (EU available) clothing shops, the worst offender I’ve encountered yet was Zara. Everything’s way too long and way too flat: clearly aimed to look good on the catwalk models but not intended for normal people. At all.

Also sizes are just numbers. Shopping online has taught me that I’m a European M, an American XS-S, and a Japanese L-XL. And then these sizes even vary from shop to shop in the same country: I’m an XL at Apples but an S at Lola&Liza, for example. They’ve also been reducing the sizes of these numbers throughout the years to make people feel bad about themselves and to sell more weight-loss products. Don’t let a number get you down, it does not define you.

So please don’t feel bad about yourself when shops refuse to cater to your size. The clothes they sell are not aimed at real human beings. They are the ones in the wrong here, not you!

More body positivity and general support for fat girls with eating disorders

I don’t usually add to posts like this but this is super important to me and this is why:

When I was thirteen, I told my therapist about my eating disorder. I was starving myself for days, then binging and purging, and then starving myself again, etc etc.

I told my therapist this and she said to me “That’s not going to help you lose weight.” And she told me to see my doctor about a diet plan. And she asked if I had anything else I wanted to talk about.

I told my best friend as a last ditch effort to get someone to care. I pulled her aside at a church meeting and said I had something to tell her. It was so hard for me to say.

She laughed it off and said she was expecting worse and then she told me “don’t do that anymore” with a smile. And I said okay, thanks, and we went back outside. And I got the sense that she was humoring me, like “aw, fat girl thinks she has a skinny person illness.”

Those were the only two people I told. I kept it to myself after that. I had NO support. I had to claw my way out of my ED on my own. I still get the urge to throw up sometimes if I’ve had a big meal, or skip a meal or work out until I pass out.

Please support fat girls with eating disorders. Please help them. Please don’t make them feel like they deserve what they are doing to themselves.

I remember seeing a women’s magazine advertising the “coffee diet” where they advised drinking warm cups of coffee in place of meals

and that - that’s an ana trick, drinking hot water to convince yourself you’ve had food

The magazine acted like it was perfectly reasonable to eat one meal a day

It’s not alarming to most people to see a fat girl skipping meals. It is easy to hide the disorder in the open because no one thinks “she hasn’t eaten lunch a single time this week.” Even if someone does notice, it’s seen as an attempt to “get healthy” and not “holy fuckballs, is she starving herself? Should I be worried? Should I try to help?”

A fat girl eating is cause for ridicule.
A fat girl not eating is nothing to worry about.

I dont usually add to these kind of posts. I dont usually put in my two cents with these kinds of things. Im not particularly fond of sharing my personal experiences….. with anyone…. (I think maybe I spend a lot of time pretending I dont know how large I am) But like one of the previous commenters I had a small story to share. More recently Ive been under a lot of stress. A hell of a lot more than Im used to, and rather than stress eating (which is something Im very intimately familiar with) I just kind of….. lost my appetite all together. And it was lost for almost a month, and Im still struggling to eat regularly. Once every 2 weeks or so I will have a day where I eat normally but the rest of the time I will force myself to eat at least once a day and drink a lot of meal replacement shakes, you know, that chocolate powder you mix with milk that is supposed to pass as “breakfast”.

Ive dropped a fair amount of weight as a result of both that and having a very active job. Im still very much overweight. Just….. a size or two smaller than I was only months ago.

Right around a month ago, my grandparents came to visit. My grandma noticed right away that I had lost some weight. She asked if I had been dieting and I told her “Well…. not exactly, I…. just….. havent been eating much. Ive been really stressed out.” I dont know why I told her that. Im not usually one to broadcast whats going on with me….. to anyone. But Ive been away from all my family for about a year now and I think maybe I was looking for some comfort.

My grandma…. looked right at me and said “Good for you” and later on in their visit my grandfather bought me a new jacket since my old ones were getting too big and told me he was proud of me and would buy me another one if that one no longer fit me next time I saw them.

Because “A fat girl not eating is nothing to worry about.”

Here goes.
I struggle with bulimia.

No one ever questioned my purging. Or how I lost weight when I did. They encouraged my disordered thinking when I hated myself after a binge. They rewarded me well for the weight I lost on exercise binges. They helped me over-restrict myself. They never questioned how much time I spent in the bathroom. It was so encouraged that I wasn’t really aware that throwing up your food wasn’t something ALL heavy girls did when they felt insecure.

It wasn’t until a few months ago that someone finally called me on it and helped me with it.

Because you can’t have an eating disorder unless you’re really skinny, right?
